Join me, a local born and raised in Kibera, for an eye-opening walking tour through Nairobi’s vibrant streets and Kenya’s largest informal settlement. Discover real stories, local art, food, and inspiring community life beyond the headlines.
Hello! My name is Lazarus Onyango, and I’m a proud local tour guide based in Nairobi, Kenya born and raised in Kibera, one of Africa’s largest informal settlements. My journey, like the streets I walk every day, is full of stories some tough, many beautiful, and all real.

Growing up in Kibera taught me resilience, creativity, and the importance of community. While the outside world often views Kibera only through the lens of poverty, I see something much deeper: strength, hope, talent, and culture. That’s what I aim to share with every guest I meet.

For years, I watched visitors come to Nairobi and miss the heart of the city its people. That inspired me to become a local guide. Now, I offer immersive, safe, and respectful walking tours through Kibera and the bustling streets of downtown Nairobi. My tours aren’t about poverty tourism — they’re about connection, understanding, and seeing the world with new eyes.

I don’t just show you places I introduce you to lives. You’ll meet local artisans, musicians, teachers, kids playing football, and mothers running businesses with whatever they have. You’ll taste Kenyan street food, hear Swahili slang, and learn the real stories that make Nairobi beat with energy and hope.

Over the years, I’ve built strong relationships with my community, and I work closely with youth groups, schools, and small businesses. A portion of my tour income supports local initiatives including clean water access, art projects, and youth empowerment programs.

My goal is to offer visitors something meaningful: a deeper understanding of life in Nairobi beyond the safari brochures. Whether you’re here for the first time or returning to Kenya, I promise a personal, authentic experience that’s grounded in respect, safety, and open conversation.

When I’m not guiding, I enjoy photography, storytelling, and mentoring local youth who want to follow in my footsteps. I believe tourism can be a tool for social change not just income.

So if you're curious, open-minded, and ready to walk the real streets of Nairobi, I invite you to join me. Come with questions, leave with stories and maybe even new friends.

Karibu (welcome) — and see you soon!
