Walking Tours of Johannesburg and its Cultural Precincts: Braamfontein, Maboneng, Newtown & Fordsburg, Rosebank When you walk with me in the streets of Johannesburg taking in the street culture amongst the African market traders or in-between the tall, sometimes empty skyscrapers or otherwise newly renovated residential apartments or strolling through the well preserved mining district or ambling through glamorous stainless steel and glass clad Rosebank and Sandton you will not be disappointed by the bird’s eye view into an evolving Africa that you are sure to find in this vibrant city. Johannesburg being the cosmopolitan hub on the African continent is home to many people who bring with them; their food, music, art and lifestyle. So we can head to China town on the east side of the city for authentic Chinese food, teas and groceries or to Fordsburg on the west side that is home to a truly Indian experience, Yeoville for West African cuisine and street culture. Johannesburg has little bits of Europe..Portuguese, Italian ,Greek, Turkish, German all around the city and large bits of South African township life too. Soweto, with it’s anti-apartheid history, the magnificent African calabash styled stadium that hosted the 2010 soccer world cup final, cafes serving local African food..pap & vleis with chakalaka or you can feast on a perfectly roasted mealie sold by one of the township ladies. You may grab a traditional Afrikaner boerewors roll from a side walk seller somewhere along the route if you choose too or sample some of our delicious biltong. Weekend markets thrive in all of Jozi’s cultural precincts, showing of South Africa’s emerging middle class with the highest quality artisan food and beer, fabulous entertainment, magnificent street art and an atmosphere you would be glad to have sampled Nights in Johannesburg are just as entertaining; visit a pub or restaurant that is frequented by locals, join a milongo; tango or salsa dance lesson, nightclub with live music, listen to jazz in the city or take in an up & coming theatre production that showcases some of Jozi’s young talent. This and so much more makes Johannesburg the city of choice for me so if you are keen to have an insider view of the city of then I am your warm and friendly answer.
Born and raised in South Africa, during both the apartheid regime and the democracy! I arrived in the city as a young student of Earth Science and more recently a Tour Guide. Johannesburg has always fascinated me; from the remnant strong colonial and apartheid beginnings to the current eclectic and dynamic culture that finds a space to thrive within South Africa’ young democracy. When you walk or drive with me, what I hope to pass to you is the view into my world as a local who, works, plays, survives and thrives in this unique city.
