Guided hikes in and around Rome. Explore city parks, forests, mountains – also in Umbria, Abruzzo and other regions in Italy.
Hello! My name is Sal, and I’m thrilled to introduce myself as a certified hiking guide based in the heart of Italy. My journey to becoming a guide has been as winding and adventurous as the trails I now lead others along. From my early roots to a diverse career in technology and outdoor exploration, every step has shaped my love for connecting people to nature and history.

Early Roots and Love for Nature

My family hails from Abruzzo and Sicily, regions blessed with stunning natural landscapes, mountains, and iconic parks – not to mention Sicily’s mesmerizing volcanoes. Despite these inspiring ancestral roots, I grew up in Germany, nestled amidst the rolling hills of the Swabian Alp, near the Black Forest. Childhood for me was synonymous with the great outdoors: climbing trees, exploring forests, and immersing myself in nature’s wonders.

Education and Career Beginnings

Following the conventional path, I pursued higher education in Media Informatics in Cologne, Germany. After graduating, I worked as a Junior Software Developer in Munich, delving into the dynamic world of technology. While my career trajectory seemed promising on paper, I soon realized the corporate world didn’t align with my inner drive for exploration and connection.

A Life-Changing Spark

Everything changed when I met an Argentinian street musician near my apartment in Munich. He didn’t just teach me guitar chords; he ignited a spark of adventure in me. Inspired by his outlook on life, I quit my job, left Munich, and embarked on a life-defining journey: hitchhiking to Barcelona and walking the Camino de Santiago. This pilgrimage marked the start of my deep commitment to exploring the world and sharing its beauty with others.

Becoming a Hiking Guide

After several years of exploration, I settled in Rome, a city rich in history, culture, and stories waiting to be uncovered. With a deep appreciation for nature and history, I joined AIGAE (Italy’s largest national hiking association) and completed their intensive training program. This certification encompassed essential skills such as orienteering, outdoor safety, risk reduction, and wilderness survival. Additionally, I enhanced my expertise by participating in a park ranger course in Abruzzo, where I learned about ecosystem preservation and park management.

Specialization and Unique Offerings

As a hiking guide, I specialize in:
• Urban Group Hikes: Exploring the hidden corners of Rome, uncovering its layered history.
• Wilderness Adventures: Leading groups through the rugged mountains, serene forests, and breathtaking trails in regions like Lazio, Abruzzo, and Sicily.
• Private Hikes: Tailor-made experiences designed to suit individual preferences, perfect for solo travelers, couples, families, or friends.
• Heritage Hikes: Delving into stories of cultural significance, such as the Irish chippers from Casalattico, the Brigants of Abruzzo, or literary journeys inspired by Goethe’s travels through Italy.

Creative and Technical Skills

Beyond guiding, I bring a unique skill set to the table. As a former Komoot route editor, I honed my expertise in mapping trails and designing routes for outdoor enthusiasts worldwide. Every hike I organize begins with meticulous preparation: researching the area’s history and cartography, inspecting trails, arranging permits, and coordinating logistics.

Language and Accessibility

Fluent in English, German, and Italian, I strive to create an inclusive environment where hikers from around the world feel welcome and inspired.

Guiding Philosophy

I firmly believe that hiking isn’t just about physical fitness; it’s a gateway to mindfulness, longevity, and sustainable living. My motto is simple yet powerful:
• “Stay fit, hike a bit.”
• “Making the world a better place, one hike at a time.”
• “Hike different – International hikes for extraordinary people.”

Through my hikes, I aim to foster a sense of adventure, connection, and curiosity, empowering people to break free from stagnant routines and discover the extraordinary in themselves and the world around them.

I can’t wait to share the trails, stories, and unforgettable moments with you here in Italy. Let’s explore together!

Warm regards,
Sal
