About
Harar is an ancient Islamic city in Ethiopia founded after the destruction of Port Adolis on the Red Sea coastline in the beginning of 8th C AD (After Christ). Following this, another alternative trade route in the Eastern section of Ethiopia began to be implemented through port Zeyla and the Gulf of Aden. Then, the new Harbors happend to be an important and frequently used commercial routes by muslim traders coming form Africa and beyond. These traders eventually set up several small polities/ villages on the surrounding highlands for sheltering purpose. Harar was one of them and belived to have flourished in about 10th C . However, its social, political, economical and cultural significances were well recognized later in the medieval period of 14th C, then reached to its climax in the mid 16th C by its emir named, Mohamed Ibin Ibrahim Algazi. He was able to confront and push the Christian Empire form their strongholds in central Ethiopia to the north backed by Ottoman Turkish. In line of that Harar established strong commercial and economical relationship with internal and external world such Morocco, India and countries in the middle east. It was that time, Harar able to mint its own coinages and forted the entire city by a high trenched wall to protect the city form outside invaders. Slowly, the power of Harar started to decline since the 19th C following its short occupation by Egypt in 1875-1885. Finally, Harar became part of Ethiopia’s Christian Empire after king Menelik the 2nd defeated its last Emir in 1887. Today, Harar is considered to be as the 4th holiest shrine in the Muslim world next to Mecca and Medina. It is mainly inhabited by the Harari people who have their own identity.
