Bahirdar, meaning by the side of the sea/lake located in northwestern Ethiopia just on the southern shore of lake TanaAccording to medieval history of Ethiopia the city was founded in the 17th C after a certain king Susuniyos, 1706-32, brought the Ark of St George in the area and built a small church nearby lake Tana, which still today offering active worshipping service to Ethiopian Orthodox church.- Even so Bahirdar was founded earlier than Gondar, its historical background is not well documented like that of other ancient cities in the country. With this, until the 1950s Bahirdar was just a small village like settlement where only few people used to live. Meaning its political and economical importance was overshadowed by other towns located in the north and south. It was later in the 1960s the initial growth of Bahirdar has started after a decision to build an Hydro Electric Power station over the Blue Nile River. This days, Bahirdar has got a beautiful geographical setting with flat landscape, Palm tree lined avenues and lake side vistas that attracts both local and foreign visitors. It also served as a springboard to explore Blue Nile River falls and ancient monastries of lake Tana which are rich in religious and tradational mural church paintings as wel as ecclesiastical treasures. These days Bahirdar is one of the largest cities in Ethiopia where about more than 800,000 thousand people are living.
