My name is Daniel Maniraguha, a professional birding and nature guide based in Musanze, northern Rwanda. I specialise in creating informative, responsible and personalised travel experiences for visitors interested in birds, wildlife, primates, landscapes, culture and local communities. My objective is to help every guest experience Rwanda safely and meaningfully while gaining a deeper understanding of the country’s natural and cultural heritage.

I hold a Bachelor of Technology in Tourism Management, completed with First Class honours, as well as an Advanced Diploma in Tourism Destination Management from Rwanda Polytechnic–Kitabi College. My academic training equipped me with knowledge of tour planning, destination management, customer service, tourism product development, sustainable tourism, conservation, hospitality operations and visitor experience management. This educational background allows me to design organised itineraries that balance the interests of guests with responsible environmental and community practices.

Birdwatching is my principal area of specialisation. I have practical experience identifying birds by sight and sound, interpreting their behaviour and explaining the habitats in which they live. I am particularly familiar with the birds and ecosystems of northern Rwanda, including the surroundings of Volcanoes National Park, the Twin Lakes, Lake Karago, Bihinga Wetland and the Rugezi Marsh area. I also have field experience in Nyungwe National Park and other important birding destinations in Rwanda. Depending on the destination, guests may encounter Albertine Rift endemics, forest specialists, wetland birds, raptors, waterbirds and many other remarkable species.

My guiding style is friendly, patient and educational. I understand that travellers have different interests and levels of experience. Some guests are dedicated birdwatchers searching for particular species, while others are beginners who simply want to enjoy nature and learn how to identify common birds. I adapt the pace, explanations and itinerary to suit each guest. I also pay attention to photography opportunities, walking ability, available time and personal preferences. I aim to make every tour enjoyable without rushing visitors or disturbing wildlife.

My professional experience includes working as a birding guide at a lodge near Volcanoes National Park, where I guided international guests on birdwatching and nature experiences. This role strengthened my skills in guest relations, nature interpretation, hospitality and personalised service. I learned how to communicate clearly with visitors from different cultural backgrounds, respond to their questions and adjust an activity according to weather conditions, fitness levels and changing interests.

I also completed field training in Nyungwe National Park, where I participated in chimpanzee-tracking activities, visitor guiding, field data collection and trail-maintenance work. This experience improved my understanding of forest ecosystems, primate tourism, national-park procedures and visitor safety. It also taught me the importance of teamwork, preparation and respecting protected-area regulations.

In addition to guiding, I am actively involved in bird conservation, monitoring and environmental education. Through my work with local conservation initiatives, I have participated in bird surveys, community-awareness activities, school birdwatching programmes and wetland-conservation efforts. I have also received training in bird-sound recording and use field tools such as binoculars, cameras, GPS devices and sound-recording equipment. This conservation experience enables me to provide guests with more than species names: I can explain the relationships between birds, habitats, communities and conservation challenges.

I can assist travellers with birding excursions, nature walks, cultural and community experiences, primate-related itineraries, scenic visits and general exploration of Rwanda. Tours can be developed for individuals, couples, families, small groups and organised groups. They may range from short local walks to full-day excursions or multi-day journeys connecting several destinations. I can also help guests plan realistic routes based on their travel dates, priorities, budget and preferred accommodation category.

As a licensed Category B driver, I understand the practical requirements of road travel and tour logistics. I value punctuality, preparation, clear communication, honesty and professional conduct. Before an activity, I make sure that guests understand the expected conditions, appropriate clothing, walking requirements and any relevant park or conservation rules. During a tour, I prioritise safety, comfort and respect for local people and natural environments.

I guide primarily in English and some times in swahili, and I have basic French communication skills. As a Rwandan guide with local knowledge, I can help visitors understand not only the attractions they see but also the wider history, traditions, livelihoods and conservation work connected to each destination.
